Learn to paint in a relaxed atmosphere, inspired by Barn Above Pond by Wolf Kahn. Each participant goes home with a finished work of art. All materials, including canvases, acrylic paint, brushes, and aprons, are provided. Our trained instructor will lead you step-by-step.

Roots & Ridges Film Premiere
Roots and Ridges: A Blowing Rock Story is the new introductory film for the museum. The film will ground visitors in the history of Blowing Rock, the story of Elliott Daingerfeild, and the role BRAHM plays in the community.

Willard's Wonderings, Watauga Wanderings: Sustaining the Watauga Humane Society
This installment of Willard's Wonderings will focus on the Watauga Humane Society, Willard will be joined by Ashlee Yepez, Director of Shelter Operations, and Courtney Taylor, Director of Development. Their conversation will focus on the Watauga Humane Society’s no-kill mission, their work of caring for more than 1,700 animals each year, and the role the community plays in sustaining the organization.
Exploring Horizon Line: Icons of a New Eden 19th-Century American Landscape Painting
In early-nineteenth century America, citizens of the young country began to seek out
accurate depictions of places. They had a real sense of the specialness of their new
country—its wide expanse and its seemingly limitless natural resources. As the century progressed, members of the Hudson River School, a loosely affiliated art movement based in New York City, began producing expressive, Romantic interpretations of the landscape.

Exploring Horizon Line: Southern Landscapes from the 19th Century to the Present
This program is presented free to the public through the generosity of the Bryant and Nancy Hanley Foundation.
This lecture will explore how Southern landscape painters captured the terrain of the American South. From the craggy ridgelines of Appalachia to the humid stillness of the Louisiana Swamp, artists rendered the region not merely as scenery, but as mythic space—charged with history, identity, and atmosphere. Special attention will be given to artists who frequently explored and sketched the wilds of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Take-Up Weaving Community in Watauga County Project Roundtable
In 2024, BRAHM was awarded the prestigious IMLS “Inspire! Small Museums” grant. The goal of this project was to build community and promote neural plasticity amongst senior citizens living in Watauga County using their particular love of fiber arts. This grant funded a series of peer-led workshops in a variety of fiber media, all of which were free to the public and took place at the Lois E Harrill Senior Center in Boone, and the Western Watauga Community Center in Sugar Grove, NC. The works in the exhibition were created during these workshops or illustrate techniques taught in the workshops.

Paint with Purpose: Design, Story, and Freshness in Oil
Most painters know what they're painting but struggle with why it matters and how to make it connect. In this intensive 3-day oil painting workshop, working artist and instructor Steve Puttrich will teach you a practical framework that transforms good paintings into compelling ones. You'll master the 12 Powers of Contrast, the hidden architecture that guides the viewer's eye and creates focus in any composition. You'll learn to identify the emotional core of your subject and let that story drive every color, value, and brushstroke decision.

In this program you'll get a chance to meet a few of the Blue Ridge Conservancy team who are working to protect the places we love. We'll get updates on some of their major projects like the Middle Fork Greenway, Northern Peaks State Trail, The Knob Boulders and Nature Preserve, and the BRC Conservation Campus.

Join us to celebrate the opening of our next exhibition, ᏔᎷᏥ ᏕᎬᏍᎬ ᎣᎩᎲᎢ Weaving our Heritage: Cherokee Baskets. The opening reception will begin in the BRAHM community meeting room for refreshments and a conversation with exhibition curator, Anna Fareillo. The framing conversation will discuss the traditions and innovations of Cherokee baskets. As well as how the artist's work is a reflection of economic, environmental, and cultural influences.

This cocktail with the curator will feature two exhibitions: Barbara Grennell: Mountain Tapestries and Take-Up: Intergeneration Textiles & Weaving Community in Watauga County. Patrons can expect one part gallery tour, two parts conversation, and a splash of cocktail party. This event is limited to 20 people.
Botanical Paper Carolina Lily Workshop
Learn about Blowing Rock’s natural history and a bit of botany, as you create a life-size paper model of North Carolina’s state official state wildflower, the Carolina Lily (Lilium michauxii). All materials and tools will be provided, and at the end of this three-hour workshop, you will take home your creation in a vase, ready for display.

Exploring Horizon Line: Art and the American Revolution
In this talk, Elizabeth Chew will consider how art shaped Americans' perceptions of the American Revolution. Works of art created during and after the war enabled Americans (first as colonists, then as citizens of a new country) to picture the stories and heroes of the fight for independence. Furthermore, works by artists Charles Willson Peale, John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, and others provided Americans with a shared origin story for their new nation.

Monuments & Mythmaking: Creating the American Landscape
Art allows humans to imagine people and places they’ve met or visited, but that imagining is always mediated by the artist and their own perspective. As early as the beginning of the nineteenth century, Americans used visual art to imagine North American environments and their place within those landscapes.
Called to Response: Poet Joseph Bathanti reads in Field Studies
Join us for a one of a kind poetic experience when renowned writer Joseph Bathanti read selections from his work that respond to the exhibition, Field Studies: Ways of Knowing Place in Southern Appalachia. This will be one of a kind because the reading will take place in the exhibition, space is limited so place reserve in advance!
App State presents: The Appalachian Oral History Project
Join App State’s Mark Coltrain for an exploration of the Appalachian Oral History Project, including audio excerpts of interviews. He will lead a lively discussion about why oral histories are an important way to document our families’ and community’s stories, and how we can all participate in this work.

2026 Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival
The Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival is a four-day, open-enrollment plein air painting event. It takes place in the beautiful mountainous area in and around the town of Blowing Rock in western North Carolina from Tuesday, September 15th, to Saturday, September 19th, 2026. It aims to bring 60 painters from around the country together to paint outside in the fresh air while getting to know each other and sharing their work in a stunning location. The event prompts applicants to explore the unique Blowing Rock architecture and spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain views—one of the most scenic areas in the country.
After four days of painting "en plein air," artists are invited to display their completed works at the Show & Sale on Saturday, September 19th. Collectors and the public are invited to attend this impressive display of Plein Air paintings to both view and purchase the unique works that highlight the beauty of the High Country. In 2025, 700 people viewed the sale opening day, purchasing over half of the 186 submitted original artworks. All art submitted to the show must be for sale and will be entered into a judged plein air painting competition.
Shopping reservations will be made available in Spring 2026. Individuals and businesses may sponsor the event for tickets to the Preview Sale for the earliest possible shopping/viewing of artwork. For sponsorship information, contact Stephan@BlowingRockMuseum.org

Yoggs Choreograph Pilgrimage
Inspired by the Patrick Dougherty exhibit and the weavings of Anni Albers, Taryn Griggs and Chris Yon (the Yoggs) will present a new work for six dancers at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum during the Blowing Rock Winter Festival. The Yoggs are galvanized by Albers and Dougherty's use of a simple element, for Albers the thread, for Dougherty the sapling, to make intricate works that invite the audience to engage, interact and dream of possibilities. In response the Yoggs will use simple everyday movements like walking, running and skipping to create a physical tapestry.

Patrick Dougherty Makes A Pilgrimage to Appalachian State
World-renowned artist Patrick Dougherty will present a public talk at Appalachian State University on April 16th in conjunction with his first-of-its-kind exhibition, Patrick Dougherty: Pilgrimage, currently on display at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) through May 17, 2026. This talk is free and open to the public.
