  • Blowing Rock Art & History Museum 159 Ginny Stevens Ln Blowing Rock United States (map)

Maud Gatewood, Genre I, 1966, acrylic on masonite, Estate of Maud F. Gatewood

Was North Carolina painter and educator Maud Gatewood a ”modernist”? What does that label mean? If so, to what extent? Martha R. Severens will explore these questions in her lecture in connection with the exhibition, The Hard Edge & The Soft Line: A Retrospective of Maud Gatewood at BRAHM.

About the speaker:

Martha R. Severens served as curator of the Greenville (SC) County Museum of Art from 1992 until 2010. She has published widely on Southern art. Since her retirement she has done consulting work for Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem and The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg. Most recently she was co-curator of Southern/Modern, an exhibition organized by the Mint Museum in Charlotte where it will be on view starting in late October 2024.
