Korzelius & Sonkiss: A Duet for Piano and Bassoon

  • Blowing Rock Art & History Museum 159 Ginny Stevens Lane Blowing Rock, NC, 28605 United States (map)

In this concert, Jordan Korzelius and Jasper Sonkiss will present a program of forgotten
or otherwise obscure classical music in hopes of exposing it to a new audience. The
program spans the eras of classical music, ranging from renaissance composer
Giovanni Bassano to living composers such as Jeff Scott, as well as William Harbinson,
a past dean of the Hayes School of Music. Throughout the concert, different
instrumentations will be featured, including piano and bassoon duo, solo piano, solo
accordion, and solo dulcian (the direct ancestor to the modern bassoon).

About the Performers

Jordan Korzelius is a classical musician of many disciplines. While most practiced as a pianist,
he also plays organ and accordion, as well as composing. After completing his undergraduate
degree in piano performance at Appalachian State University, Jordan has elected to further his
studies at App State as a graduate student.
Jordan is the organist for three churches in the WNC area: St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church
in Jefferson, Bethany Lutheran Church in Boone, and Church of the Epiphany in Blowing Rock.
As a graduate assistant, Jordan works as an accompanist at App State, with his responsibilities
ranging from playing in symphonic ensembles and choirs to accompanying individual vocal and
instrumental students for various performances.
While an undergraduate student, Jordan won the opportunity to play the first movement of
Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto with the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra through the school’s
Concerto-Aria competition in 2024. He has also programmed and performed two recitals,
including repertoire such as Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an
Exhibition.

Jasper Sonkiss is a bassoonist, musicologist and educator based in Boone, North Carolina.
Sonkiss takes special interest in performing lesser known and forgotten historical bassoon
repertoire, especially the music for the predecessor of the bassoon, the bass dulcian. He is active as a musicologist as well as a performer and currently serves as the musicology and
ethnomusicology graduate assistant at Appalachian State University.
Jasper Sonkiss received his Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance at the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro and is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Bassoon
Performance at Appalachian State University.
