Curator’s Corner: James Louis Lundean

This week, we're continuing to highlight our latest exhibition, "Marjorie & Louis." Louis Lundean would regularly write and illustrate letters to his wife, Marjorie Daingerfield. Due to work obligations, the two spent as much time together as they did apart. Since they were both artists, Louis and Marjorie traveled extensively for exhibitions, lectures, teaching opportunities, and commissions. And while Louis depicted himself as a rugged cowboy of the American West, his love letters to Marjorie truly reveal his softer, more poetic side. Several of these letters can be seen here--all of which refer to Blowing Rock and Westglow, the summer home of the Daingerfield family, where Marjorie and Louis spent many years together--and many more are available to be experienced in this exhibition.

"My Darling... Four years ago in barren mountains, you remember, I asked you to be mine. A long stark desert stretched between us--that space was quickly covered, and now in these blue changing mountains that you so loved, I ask and know that you will always be mine. Your, Louis."
- Louis Lundean to Marjorie Daingerfield, September 20, 1949
