Field Trip Information for the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum offers a variety of exhibits and hands-on projects for students in grades K-12 can enjoy.  Visitors can explore and discover the heritage, history, and artistic traditions of our region through our exhibits and educational materials.  After touring the galleries, students visit our Education Classroom where they can create their own art project tailored to the themes of the exhibits.

Educators may choose from the field trip offerings or plan a specialized field trip with the Educational Programs Coordinator.  Please see below for field trip offerings and scheduling details.

  • North Carolina Treasures: Artistic traditions and heritage of Western North Carolina.

This field trip examines the artistic traditions of potter Glenn Bolick, and the specialty chair maker, Max Woody.  Both men are carrying on the family traditions of their crafts. Students will learn about how pottery is produced and what makes a Max Woody chair so special through a gallery tour and games.  Following the Museum tour students will then venture down into the Education Classroom to create their own specialty projects.  Common Core and Essential Standards North Carolina: Visual arts, North Carolina history, geography, and language arts.

  • North Carolina Treasures: The Science of Arts and Crafts.

Where does clay come from?  How is it formed? How long have people been using clay as a form of technology? What other types of natural resources do people use for everyday items? What is the physics behind making a chair?  This field trip examines the science of pottery and wood working.

Following a tour and exploration of the galleries, students will then visit the education classroom to work in groups creating a functional, everyday object out of organic materials.  Common Core and Essential Standards of North Carolina: Visual art, math, and science
