Art Lesson w/ Ms. Jennifer: Sonia Delaunay

Let’s express ourselves by creating abstract art in the style of Sonia Delaunay.

About the Artist:

Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) and Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) were husband and wife artists (from France and Russia, respectively) who began the Orphism art style, known for its geometric shapes and vibrant colors. Together they created many paintings, murals, and designs for play sets. Sonia went on to design dresses, fabrics, magazine covers, stores, furniture, and interiors.

In 1964, Delaunay became the first living female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre Museum. She died on December 5, 1979 in Paris, France at the age of 94. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, among others.
