Art Lesson w/ Ms. Jennifer: Solar System Art

Materials:

  • Use your favorite materials:  I will use paper, pencil, crayons, and watercolor. You could also use paints, chalk pastels, oil pastels, markers, or colored pencils.

  • Paper

  • Various round objects to trace for the sun and planets. Have a few sizes, from a small bowl, cup, even a glue stick lid for the smallest planet.

Instructions:

  1. Begin by positioning your largest circle off the edge of the paper to form the sun. Hold it still with one hand and trace using the other hand.

  2. Next, begin tracing small and medium circles for the planets. Make Jupiter the largest planet.

  3. Once you have traced all the planets, you can color and shade.

  4. Color the entire circle the lightest color you want to use. Then on the side farther from the sun, create a shadow side with darker colors.

  5. For the space background, I used a white crayon to make stars, then washed over with a blue watercolor paint. You could also use blue or black crayons, markers, or paints.
